The last two weekends in Aiken have come with winter storm advisories. Last weekend, many of us thought the weather was going to get pretty rough. People went out to buy generators, and shelves at local supermarkets cleared quickly. In the end, nothing major happened—but it definitely had everyone paying attention.

Because of that, we felt much more prepared going into this weekend, January 31. This time, the snow actually arrived. It started around 11 a.m. and continued steadily until about 10 p.m. By around 4 p.m., the yard was already covered.

I took my little girls outside to enjoy it and tried to show them how to have a snowball fight. I’m not sure the youngest one was a fan, but it was still a fun moment and a great opportunity to bond with the kids. When snow is this rare in Aiken, you take advantage of it.

What Is a Typical Winter Like in Aiken?

A normal winter in Aiken is generally mild compared to much of the country. Most winter days are cool rather than cold, with daytime temperatures often ranging from the 40s to 60s. Snowfall is rare, and when it does happen, it’s usually light and short-lived. For most years, winter in Aiken means occasional cold snaps, crisp mornings, and plenty of clear, sunny days in between.

So, is snow normal during Aiken winters? I’d still say no. It does happen once in a while, but it’s not the norm. For anyone thinking about moving to Aiken from up north, this doesn’t compare to places where snow is a regular part of winter life. Here, it’s more of an occasional surprise.

We saw a bit of snow last winter and again this year—but in Aiken, snow remains the exception, not the rule.
